Lauren Kelly

What makes Lauren Wildly Capable?

While Lauren has an impressive and lengthy list of accomplishments, what makes her wildly capable is the way she embodies resiliency and radical self-acceptance while channeling transcendental, esoteric, and evolutionary visions for her art which is rooted deep in ancestral memory and the feminine experience.” KRISTEN ARAMBULA HERNANDEZ

What makes you feel proud?

I feel proud when I see good things happen to good people. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s a sort of justice. I also feel proud when I arrive at the end of a painting. There’s a moment when you realize that something in you knows it’s done, and you put down your brush and you step back... and it’s finished. It’s this strange knowing, even if you hadn’t planned on calling it done yet. That feeling makes me proud.

What keeps you up at night?

I’m kept up at night by things I don’t talk about, but most of them boil down to a lifelong knock-down, drag-out fight with a mainstream cultural norm of selfish apathy masquerading as empathy. Aside from that, authenticity keeps me up at night. Authenticity and everything it demands.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

The biggest influence in my life is probably still my high school choir director. He had the most incredible ability to take a lesson in one arena, and then use pattern recognition to apply that same lesson to a totally different arena. I try to cultivate the same pattern recognition.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

So far the biggest obstacle in my life has been a persistent low self-regard; I really say the nastiest things to me. But I’m constantly learning new ways to keep the inner critic distracted. She’s like a hyperactive dog in my head.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

One year from today, I hope I’m more at peace. And also I hope I’m more consistent with sunscreen.
