What makes you feel proud?

I have put a lot of work into becoming a better human, a better listener, a better mother, a better friend, and a better “me.” I think the older you get, the more important it is to be a better listener. The more you live, the more experiences you have in your life. Every season is different. I’ve become a different person at each season of my life. I think about my life, and I’ve been around a long time. I think you just evolve if you really work to be better in every aspect. As a better listener, I think I gain empathy. If I can put myself in someone else’s shoes, I recognize everyone is going through something. Lots of people just need a listener.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

I have had mentors at every level who have influenced me over the years. I gleaned so much from my parents and teachers, but my children are my mentors, too. They help you develop into the person you are by just trying to be models to them. I’ve had so many mentors and people I admired in my life, but I’ve had the biggest influence from my faith in God. It was so impactful being a little girl growing up and learning God is with me and I can be like Christ. My faith in God has anchored me throughout my life.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

Overcoming fears, doubts, and negative thoughts. Growing up in an environment that was challenging as an African American girl in a world that was so discriminating, I had to overcome that heritage. I had to prove myself. There are so many layers to overcome, but I always go back to who God says I am. Once I embrace the image of that, I can throw off the negative images I have of myself. I am marvelously and wonderfully made by God, but it’s a lifelong journey to see myself like that.

What advice do you wish you could give your younger self? How might it have changed your course?

I would have encouraged her to believe in herself, not to let anyone tell her what she can or cannot accomplish. I would tell her to love herself and treat herself well. Live fully, be healthy and joyful, pray, and always trust God. Nobody can be you but you. Love yourself. I’ve had an opportunity to build on the image of who God says I am. We imitate people in our life, but just be uniquely you.
