What makes you feel proud?
First and foremost, my son and the amazing, kind person he is. I’m also proud of the work I’ve done and the lessons I’ve learned that have led me to this point in life. I’m a big proponent of learning all I can, while I can. I think that has been such an asset not only for me but also for my family and community because I don’t hoard information. I feel proud when I see young people get involved in community and civic engagement work. I’m always proud when I see communities come together to advocate for their needs or stand against harm.
What keeps you up at night?
Sometimes I feel like I need to go harder, like I’m not doing enough. Other times I feel like I’m doing too much and need to prioritize rest. A lot of what keeps me up and night involves planning for the future but I am making a concerted effort to focus more on the present.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
I lost several family members including my dad in a short period of time and it has had a profound impact on me and the way I view life and time.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My mom and my son. I strive to make them proud and make life better for them. I’m also always inspired by those who came before me. So much of the foundation has been laid by incredible women in the past who saw a vision for a more equal and equitable society. I’m blessed to stand on the shoulders of giants and I never take that for granted.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I hope I have found a way to create more balance in my life. I want to focus more on the present and enjoy the journey along the way. I hope to continue evolving into the best version of myself!
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
There are a lot of issues I would like to solve but I think they can all be summed up by saying that I want my community and communities across our state to thrive. Not just live in survival mode but have their needs met and have access to things to enrich their lives, and to enjoy life. I would also like to see more civic engagement and participation.
