What does your typical day look like?
My typical day starts around 5 a.m. and I start working before 6:30 a.m. My job entails accounting for a large oil and gas company, and I am blessed to work for a great company. There is a good restaurant on-site so I usually grab something to eat at my desk. My daughter works for the same company so we sometimes share a meal together. At the end of the day, I go home to my wonderful husband. We eat dinner together and enjoy spending time together and with family.
What makes you feel proud?
My greatest source of pride is my family. I am blessed with three children and grandchildren. I also take pride in working for a company that values integrity; it feels good to be part of an organization that aligns with my principles. And when I reflect on the challenges I’ve overcome to get where I am today, I can’t help but feel proud of the resilience and strength that brought me here.
What keeps you up at night?
I’m blessed with wonderful children but I think all mothers at one time or another worry about their kids. I heard someone say that if I had known how good they would turn out, I wouldn’t have spent so much time worrying. I think that is a great thing to keep in mind.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
One of my early obstacles was getting married at 16, right out of 10th grade. I became a mother the following year. It definitely wasn’t easy, but I was determined to graduate from college. I did so in four years, graduating by the time I was 20. I later earned a graduate degree as a single mother.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
I would like to combat food insecurity. I started adulthood at 16. I was blessed to benefit from a program called WIC which helped provide food for my child. This and other help I received allowed me to further my education and take care of my family. I would like to help others in this way.
