Masie Bross
What makes Masie Wildly Capable?
My aunt Masie is an incredible woman. She was the Executive Director of Whiz Kids for many years and has really led with heart to help underprivileged children get the education they need. She believes a lot of societal problems today are rooted in failed educational pillars. I am grateful to call her family.” NAOMA SERNA-ZAHN
What makes you feel proud?
I started a program called Whiz Kids that has been extremely successful by bringing reading tutors and mentors to meet one hour a week with children. The success of this program has been phenomenal. I started it in 1996, and when I retired in 2013, we had 1,500+ volunteers using 70+ churches serving 30+ schools helping 850+ kids every week during the school year. Whiz Kids has continued with a small decline during COVID. At the end of this year, 568 students were served by 940 volunteers. In 2026, we will celebrate 30 years of sustaining an effective, vibrant program serving kids, and it is my joy to continue being involved.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
Cynthia Huffmyer is my best friend. My family moved from rural Oklahoma to Edmond for better schools and better influence, and she has been that influence for me and for my children.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Transforming from being a small town country girl and introvert to taking the role of Executive Director and Founder of Whiz Kids. I had to overcome fear. Fear of the inner city neighborhoods, fear of speaking, and fear of making big decisions.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
Technology at my age is an irritant. I want to learn to be at ease with it so I can understand and communicate in the same language as my grandkids and the world we live in.
