Katie Templeton
What makes Katie Wildly Capable?
Katie is making her way in a field heavily dominated by men. She’s an outstanding leader, an encouraging mom, and the kindest human. Professionally, Katie has not only been an outstanding lawyer, but she most recently was named Chairwoman of the Federation of State Medical Boards, only the second non-physician in 112 years to hold the seat.” ASHLEY SIMPSON
What makes you feel proud?
I am most proud that my children look up to me and that my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps to become a lawyer and maybe the first mother/daughter pair to chair the Federation of State Medical Boards, which I chair now. I am proud for saying yes when presented with opportunities that felt daunting and rising to the occasion of serving my organizations boldly and with compassion. Lastly, I feel proud remaining true to myself and convictions but always with kindness and empathy for others.
What keeps you up at night?
My concern for others keeps me awake at night. In so many ways we have become a more selfish society and are lacking empathy and kindness for others. I worry about the rights of women, the health and safety of children, and the world my children will face throughout their lives. But I’m reminded of the difficulties my grandparents overcame and I have hope.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
The biggest obstacle in my life has been being a six foot tall woman working in what is often a “man’s world” and all that entails. Although I’ve endured an autoimmune disease that then impacted my children soon after birth and other family difficulties, the constant has been navigating the fragile egos of others in professional settings as a result of my height.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
I once heard if you don’t change your mind about something within a year, you aren’t growing and changing. I hope in a year I have a greater understanding of ways to improve medicine. I hope I have even more compassion, empathy, and understanding, and I hope I have made an impact on the lives of others.
