What makes you feel proud?

I feel proud that I have been brave enough to walk through understanding my life experiences, trauma responses, beliefs, and circumstances and have learned to properly love myself and others. I’m proud of my two growing boys who have truly saved my life and continue to enrich this life with new joyful and interesting perspectives every day.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

Understanding and releasing deeply held limiting beliefs that influenced my behavior and defined how I treated myself. My healing journey has exposed so many aspects of myself that no longer serve me – whether it be self-doubt, feeling incapable or not enough, not speaking up when I’m hurt or feel uncomfortable, allowing others to treat me a certain way, or my own self-sacrificial patterns. I kept meeting myself in familiar cycles that brought me pain. Recognizing and holding space for these parts of myself and subsequently resolving the underlying belief structure has been the most impactful, expansive, and challenging thing I have ever done. It’s also the most liberating and joyful.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

As a girl, I struggled to trust and sharing my mom was a challenge for me. Enter my stepdad, Mike. The first few years of our relationship were a struggle filled with resistance and territorial anger, but year after year, he showed up. He taught me how to work hard and think critically. He created structure and discipline in my life when I desperately needed it. He created a path for me to move forward and gave me tools to manage my way onward. He saved and provided a life for me that I would not have had otherwise. He truly changed my life.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never take it personally. How a person treats you is a reflection of how they feel about themselves rather than how they feel about you. Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about, so be kind.

One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?

I hope that I am fully honoring my body and life force and providing consistent nutrients and space for my well-being. Our lives are hectic and busy so this is a work in progress, but I also know that I can best love and serve others when I have the resources I need to sustain myself.
