Jayra Camarena

What makes Jayra Wildly Capable?

Jayra is a world changer, and nothing stops her! I admire her strength, her love for this community, and her love for God. The process to start a non-profit organization to help victims of domestic and sexual violence has been hard but she has remained faithful and obedient to God’s calling for her life. La Luz Organization exists because she took a leap of faith and believed she could.” DULCE ESCOBAR

What makes you feel proud?

The feeling of pride comes when I reflect on where I was and where I am now, and seeing my daughters experience what I always dreamed of.

What keeps you up at night?

Everything! Sometimes, I dream about my to-do list! Am I doing a good job as a leader? Am I being a good Christian? Do we have enough funding? My brain is always everywhere. God gave me a vision, and with his help, I have made it a reality. I am the Founder and Executive Director of La Luz Org, the only Oklahoma Attorney General-Certified culturally specific, faith-based non-profit agency serving domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking Latino survivors in the state of Oklahoma.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

My mom taught me to work hard and not to give up, no matter how difficult things were. Eneyda, my childhood friend, became a teenage mother, and I learned so much from her and applied it when I became a mom. My sister Ali and friends Whitney and Dulce have also helped and prayed for me to grow in my walk with Christ, becoming a good leader, wife, and friend. However, the most significant influence is Jesus Christ.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

I was raised by a single mother in south central Los Angeles. I witnessed domestic violence in my household; I learned how to overcome obstacles at a young age.

As an adult, I believe that it has been to believe in myself and the calling God has placed in my life. To see me as he sees me... worthy!
