What makes you feel proud?
When I see my daughters accomplish something they have worked really hard on... nothing makes me feel more proud!
What keeps you up at night?
I’m in a new stage in life where two of my children have launched and the youngest is two years away. For the first time in many years, I’m starting to think about how to spend my time that doesn’t revolve around motherhood. I’ve recently started my master’s degree, and I’m excited about learning and where that will lead to future opportunities.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My girlfriends, collectively, are my biggest influence. Strong women amaze me, and I’m privileged to know several.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
The biggest obstacle I have faced is myself! Or rather, a belief that I might fail at something so I don’t commit to trying. I’ve learned through the years that the fear of failure is actually worse than failure itself. I’m working on changing my narrative to “fail fast.” This narrative change has given me freedom and courage to try new things, or to begin again things I enjoyed when I was younger. I performed in my first piano recital since middle school this past spring!
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Improving access to basic resources (food, quality housing, mental health resources) so that fewer disadvantaged youth end up in the juvenile justice system.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
You have to grow into it, you’re not an immediate expert.
