Shawntay Alexander
What makes Shawntay Wildly Capable?
Shawntay is a catalyst of change and the voice of the voiceless. She does the work for the community that otherwise wouldn’t get done and she works hard to champion the interests of Black youth, remove stigma, and overcome barriers. Ms. Alexander is steadfast in fights for suitable resources for Black youth and I want her to know that her work in the community is valued and appreciated. SHANNON MUSE
What makes you feel proud?
I take great pride in confronting the fears that have surfaced throughout my leadership journey. It’s deeply rewarding to know I can make a positive impact on the people I serve, both at home and in my community. I’m especially proud of how I’ve modeled service and leadership for my son, Romel. Not only has he maintained strong grades and excellent behavior, but he’s also embraced learning and participating in the various work I do. He’s the best son anyone could ask for and I’m honored to be his mother. Lastly, I’m immensely proud of my resilient, powerful community. It’s a true privilege to serve and be a part of it. To God be the glory!
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My mom is the greatest influence in my life. Everything I am or have achieved is because of her great example, love, and support. She’s funny, smart, and jazzy, and I find myself becoming more like her every day. Shout out to my mama, Tammy Jackson!
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
Myself, but with each challenge, I’ve gained a new perspective and strengthened my trust in God. I am grateful for His grace.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
One year from today, I hope to have a better work-life balance with improved stress management, allowing me to spend more quality time with my family. With my son transitioning to high school, I also want to support him through the adjustment, focusing on his academic and skill development, as well as encouraging him to explore new interests.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Systemic racism and discrimination. As a social worker, I see how people’s environments shape their lives and understand that various systems play a role in this. Persistent racism and discrimination affect many aspects of life, like education, jobs, housing, and interactions with the criminal justice system. As a result, we observe significant disparities in wealth, health, and opportunities within the Black community.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
More than one thing can be true. This idea lets us embrace a variety of emotions and experiences without rushing to judge. It helps build emotional strength when life gets complicated, and I believe we’re all navigating it the best we can. If you’re reading this, remember to be kind to yourself along the way.
