What makes you feel proud?
I am most proud of my faith, strong marriage of 22 years, and how our two children are growing up to be good humans in this world that feels a little out of control some days. I am proud of my career and all I have accomplished professionally. And although the title of CEO is fantastic, I am more proud that those around me have the confidence and belief in me to lead our company with purpose, strategy, fiscal responsibility, and compassion. I am a doer and have always believed that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. That is a motto I try to exemplify and model for others, especially my kids and those I lead; I always strive to give it my very best.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Everything in moderation. This was standard advice in my family growing up, and I still use it today. Keep life balanced and your values in focus and things will work themselves out.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
This question is always hard for me. I know there have been hard days, anxiety, worry, and frustration, but I feel incredibly blessed that nothing stands out so great among the others. If I had to pick something, it would probably be delivering my daughter at 32 weeks, which was scary. But by the grace of God she and I were both fine and we were surrounded by family and a loving support group and care team. Maybe it is the incredible circle of people I am ever surrounded with that make the obstacles seem not so great or unbearable.
What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?
Poverty. I realize this is a huge, all-encompassing issue and not one that I – or any single person – can solve. Poverty can have different definitions depending on who you are talking with, but I think we can all make a small difference in our own unique way. All our small differences add up to help provide opportunities for people to access better housing, jobs, healthcare, and whatever they need. There is poverty all around us, sometimes blatantly obvious and sometimes not as much; I think the biggest problem is not realizing this and not helping to provide opportunity to others for their version of a better life.
