The world is brighter, kinder, and better because of Jane and the ways she touches lives.” ZANA WILLIAMS

What does your typical day look like?

My schedule varies from day to day and week to week, so it is difficult to describe a typical day. Each week generally includes a variety of volunteer activities, organizational and church meetings, writing projects, and domestic responsibilities. I also try to walk, practice yoga, or go to a Zumba class most days.

What makes you feel proud?

I feel proud when I’m able to accomplish a goal or when I’m able to help someone else accomplish theirs. Last year, I was proud to publish a book about my experiences at the Boys & Girls Clubs as a way to highlight the life-changing opportunities provided by Club involvement. I am also proud of my 50-year marriage with my husband and that we raised two sons who are creative and compassionate humans making a positive difference in our world.

What keeps you up at night?

I am deeply concerned about the state of our world considering the catastrophic impacts of climate change and war. I worry about children in our community who are hungry, mistreated, and/ or do not have the opportunity to attend a well-resourced school with qualified and compassionate teachers. I am disappointed about decisions being made at all levels of government based on political party rather than the good of the country, state, and community, and the tendency of many to hide the realities of our shared history to the detriment of a better future.

Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?

My faith in God and Jesus guide my sense of purpose and daily decision-making.

What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?

The biggest obstacle at the present time is the awareness that my remaining time on earth is limited, yet I still have so many things I hope to accomplish.

What’s the single biggest problem you’d like to solve in your community?

The fact that our state ranks at the very bottom on indicators of health, education, and general well-being for our youth is the single biggest problem in my mind. A robust, inclusive, and resourced public education available to all kids would solve multiple problems. Educating and preparing our next generation to lead is critical to our future.

What advice do you wish you could give your younger self? How might it have changed your course?

I believe I made the best decisions possible with the information I had at the time. No regrets.
