What makes you feel proud?
I carry many titles: friend, sister, daughter, wife, partner, educator, admissions professional, colleague, and supervisor... but I am most proud to be “mom.” I have been gifted with two little women who I get to pour into and make feel loved.
Poet Kahlil Gibran said in his poem On Children: “You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.” My heart aches knowing I am not in the “house of tomorrow” with them, but what an honor to be in the “now.”
What keeps you up at night?
Public education and its future. So many spheres influence what we believe. I hope for a more collaborative day where we can honor our future – our children. My only “job” in this world is to love people. Sure, I work in Admissions & Recruitment at the University of Oklahoma. However, I believe strongly that our calling among humanity is to love people. If that is through creative marketing – great! If that is through curating beautiful meals – great! If that is through curing diseases – great! I get to love people through reading their stories. I get to love students who have a vision for a better tomorrow. I get to love families who are frustrated with financial aid and affording “the dream.” I get to and that’s an incredible, incredible gift.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
One of my best friends: Meghan Mueller. Resilience comes to mind. No one in Oklahoma City cares more empathetically about those experiencing homelessness than she does. She is kind, she is brave, and she reminds me of my worth just through her friendship. I can’t say enough things, but she inspires me to dream big and without apology.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
My family has been both a grounding, loving force and incredibly heartbreaking. All families experience great moments and great loss. Not only have I had to overcome physical loss, but emotional loss as well. I think my biggest obstacle has always been getting to a healthy place of feeling like that emotional loss is “okay.”
