What makes you feel proud?
I am proud when I see someone I have been working with have an aha moment and things we have been working on click. I am proud when someone I’ve been working with achieves a milestone that they have been working toward, even if that achievement involves them leaving any of our organizations to go somewhere else.
What keeps you up at night?
I stay awake at night with the challenges of the day rolling around in my mind. In the quiet, without the distractions, my mind will start separating and categorizing the challenges. Sometimes I am kept up at night by the book I am reading, but the days have been busy, so I haven’t gotten to immerse myself in this form of relaxation lately.
What’s been the biggest obstacle in your life so far?
One of my biggest obstacles has been believing in myself. I have always known that I have (or can get) the knowledge to be or do anything I want, but I never quite believed that I had support to go for it. Or the gumption to go for it on my own, without support.
Who is the biggest influence in your life? Why?
The person that was the biggest influence in my early life was my mother. She showed us a way to resolve conflict. She showed us not to let our emotions get away from us and stick to the facts. To know the direction of your arguments and stay on track.
One year from today, how do you hope you’re different?
One year from today, I hope I have taken some of the leaps that I have been contemplating. I hope I have stepped into a new role that allows me the flexibility that I want in a work schedule. With that flexibility, I want to travel more and spend more time with my brother’s family.
What advice do you wish you could give your younger self? How might it have changed your course?
I would give myself the advice to believe in myself and jump for new experiences, to not wait for the situation to be perfect or for the support to be there. Many times the support is there (or if it’s not, you need a new community). But, I don’t know that giving my younger self this advice would have changed my course. I believe that each experience we have molds us into who we are. If I hadn’t had the experiences, I might not be who I am today.
